چکیده

The classical choice theory assumes that an individual’s choice does not depend on irrelevant alternatives or the way that alternatives are labeled; such as an endowment or a default. However, phenomena such as the “Status Quo Bias” and “Attraction Effect” which apparently imply violation of rationality, have been widely observed. Even though they exhibit similar pattern of choices, the relationship between these two phenomena has never been studied yet. This study (1) separates the influence of the endowment and the decoy option in people’s choice behavior, and (2) investigates the determination of the reference point in situations where both an endowment and a decoy option are in the set of available alternatives. Our experimental data shows that a status quo has a stronger impact on individual choice behavior compared to a decoy option. Moreover, a status quo is a better candidate for reference point even in a choice set where there are both status quo and decoy options. These results increase our understanding of both reference dependence and the attraction effect. JEL Classification: D11, D81.

The Effect of Ambiguity on Status Quo Bias: An Experimental Study∗

We conduct an experiment to determine the effect of ambiguity on status quo bias. We find no evidence of the bias in the absence of ambiguity and when ambiguity is present both in the status quo option and the alternative. We do find evidence for status quo bias under asymmetric presence of ambiguity, i.e. when the status quo option is non-ambiguous and the alternative is, or when the status qu...

Status Quo Bias under Uncertainty: An Experimental Study∗

Individuals’ tendency to stick to the current state of affairs, known as the status quo bias, has been widely documented over the past 30 years. Yet, the determinants of this phenomenon remain elusive. Following the intuition suggested by Bewley (1986), we conduct a systematic experiment exploring the role played by different types of uncertainty on the emergence of the bias. We find no bias wh...

Status quo bias, multiple priors and uncertainty aversion

Motivated by the extensive evidence about the relevance of status quo bias both in experiments and in real markets, we study this phenomenon from a decisiontheoretic prospective, focusing on the case of preferences under uncertainty. We develop an axiomatic framework that takes as a primitive the preferences of the agent for each possible status quo option, and provide a characterization accord...

Over System - Justification Motives in Information Search Change We Can Believe In : Using Perceptions of Changeability to Promote System - Change Motives

People are motivated to defend and rationalize the status quo, a phenomenon known as system justification. We propose the existence of a second, countervailing system-level motivation: system-change motivation, which is concerned with bettering the status quo over time. The opportunity to receive diagnostic information about the status quo pits the two system-level motives against each other. W...

Limited attention and status quo bias

We introduce and axiomatically characterize a model of status quo bias in which the status quo affects choices by both changing preferences and focusing attention. The resulting Limited Attention Status Quo Bias model can explain both the finding that status quo bias is more prevalent in larger choice sets and that the introduction of a status quo can change choices between non-status quo alter...
